The Do’s and Don’ts of Kitchen Sink Drains

First, let us turn to the don’ts so you may prevent blockages in your kitchen sinks:

Do not dump greasy substances down your kitchen drain

Eggshells, oil, grease, coffee grounds or other household waste should not be dumped in the kitchen sink as they have higher chances to block your drain altogether. Then the water will start overflowing and create a nuisance in your kitchen.

Do not throw away band-aids or bandages down your kitchen sink

You may not do it intentionally, but sometimes, when you are not that careful, you may accidentally dispose of such substances into your kitchen sink. This may block the drain if you repeat it over and over again. So, refrain from doing so and keep these sticky materials away from your kitchen sink.

Do not use chemicals to unblock your drain

In case the kitchen drain suffers from blockages even after following these preventive measures, it is not wise to use chemicals to unblock it. This is because most chemical drain cleaners have adverse effects on the environment and they are not also that effective. Moreover, the caustic nature of these chemicals may corrode your pipes.

Now, let us shed some light on what you SHOULD DO to prevent blockages in your kitchen sink drain-

Sprinkle some amount of baking soda on your kitchen sink and cover it. Run warm water after about half an hour along with little bit of vinegar. This will help you keep your kitchen sink drain clean. Do this once in a week to prevent blockages.

Do use a plunger to unblock a blocked drain

Continue pumping for 2-3 minutes and then stop to take some rest. Repeat the process if necessary. This is get rid of the blockage in your drain.

When my nephews were visiting last weekend, they advised me that my kitchen sink drains too slowly. Your information that I should hire a professional plumber to unblock my drain instead of using chemicals that can corrode the pipes is really helpful.

I've heard that using chemicals to clean your drains is effective. Your information that while it may be effective, it can corrode the pipes and cause other issues in your drainage system is really helpful. My kitchen sink isn't draining properly, even when I turn on the garbage disposal, so I think I will call a professional to clean my drains instead of using chemicals. http://www.rmc1.com.au/draincleaning
